I'm not out for a walk on the wild side. No, it's quite a bit more complex than that. I’m the guy your mother hoped you would have brought home for dinner: polite, helpful, nicely dressed and well-mannered in all the ways that signal a “proper” middle-class upbringing.  You are not these things. My mother would have disapproved of all your tattoos and piercings, at least that's what she'd say. But I know she'd be intimidated by your intelligence and frightened because you're not afraid to say what you think. You express yourself. On your body. With your body. In words. And you relish the thought of not fitting in. But you’re attracted to correct spelling and proper punctuation, among other things. It's why you’re still reading this.  I like you because outwardly you’re so many things that I’m not.  Inwardly, we share some similarities: we're extremists; we're addicts (though no longer to drugs and alcohol); we'll try anything, probably more than once; we spend too much time in our heads.  Outwardly, I may look a bit square.  My students have said I bear some resemblance to Clark Kent. This is mostly a facade. As a younger man I explored the punk and hardcore scenes in my working-class town.  I liked the Cramps, Skinny Puppy, and Ministry.  I saw 7 Seconds and other shows with the straight edges at the Elk's Club down by the canal. These are hardly edgy bona fides, and I'm surely dating myself. Hopefully you get the point.  I'm fit, bi and masculine. I'm clean, and take that seriously. I’m politically liberal, humorously self deprecating, open minded, and uninhibited. I'm a professor. I'm married. Like I said, it's complicated. But you may already be in a relationship. He can join us. Maybe you're a man, in which case she can join us. But there must be at least one she. Ultimately, it's because I'm so polite and formal that you're surprised when I press you against the wall and bite down on your ear lobe. There aren't enough hands to go everywhere you want.
